As the war in Ukraine rages on, there are people supporting the country even without taking up arms. They are doing so by garnering the support of like-minded people. And one such group comprises violinists from across the world.
It all started with Ukrainian violinist Illia Bondarenko when he made a video of himself playing from a basement shelter in Kyiv, Ukraine. This moved Kerenza Peacock, a renowned British classical violinist based in Los Angeles, USA, who approached violinists from across the globe to perform in a virtual concert. About 100 violinists joined in to express their solidarity with the besieged country. This performance is posted on a dedicated website, violinistssupportukraine.com.
Peacock explains on this website, “I befriended some young violinists in Ukraine via Instagram and discovered some were in bomb shelters but had their violins. So, I asked colleagues across the world to accompany them in harmony. And I got sent videos from 94 violinists in 29 countries in 48 hours!”
Violin Becomes A “Symbol Of Resistance” In War In Ukraine
In addition to Bondarenko, the video shows nine other young violinists hiding in bomb shelters in Ukraine joining in unison in playing the touching Ukrainian folk song titled ‘Verbovaya Doschechka’. They are accompanied by musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Hollywood Studios, and the entire violin section of the Munich Chamber Orchestra. There is also a bevy of famous violinists from countries, such as Belgium, Denmark, Georgia, India, Ireland, Moldova, New Zealand, South Africa, Poland, South Korea, and the Netherlands. This is certainly a stunning collaboration of international violinists playing in support of Ukraine.
Peacock continues to encourage anyone who is desirous of making a recording to download the full music score and play along with the original video. She has also created a list of organizations for non-musicians, who wish to contribute to the cause in other ways.
