Blowing into the melted glass to create items, such as vases and bowls, is the standard practice. However, intricate and delicate figurines require a different technique. And it is this technique that Nikita Drachuk, a Ukrainian-based artist, is an expert. With it, she creates undulating, delicate, and refined figurines.
This centuries-old technique is called lampwork. It uses a gas burner flame to melt the glass. Since the melting point of the glass is between 800 degrees and 12000 degrees depending upon the glass, the glass for this work is heated to 1800 degrees. This helps achieve the necessary physical state for making small figurines. Of course, each and every product has to be made by hand.
In the hands of a highly-skilled artist like Drachuk, the glass is transformed into incredible works of art. Her ease at tackling some of the most complex creatures on the planet is simply amazing. Take, for instance, her series on octopuses, where she captures this eight-armed sinuous aquatic creature in so much detail that it turns lifelike. Not only this but to make her creations look more beautiful, she uses vibrant colors that make her figurines look lifelike.
Drachuk’s other popular series is of arachnids, especially the eight-legged spiders. The delicate body and the spindly legs of these creepy crawlies, infused with a mix and match of different colors, are something to be seen to be believed. Some spiders are imbued with mottled blues and greens on their legs and abdomen in a stunning visual display.
Handmade Glass Sculptures
Drachuk’s mastery over this technique comes as no surprise since her family has been in this business for three generations and has also established a family-owned glassblowing studio called Glass Symphony. This workshop has been around for over two decades.
