What happens when you combine art with marine biology? Courtney Mattison, a marine biologist, and artist has been working to find out.
Mattison’s work combines sculpture, data visualization, and science to create pieces that encourage people to think about the world and their place in it. She uses her background in marine science and technology to create striking visualizations of ocean life that help people understand the complexities of ocean ecosystems.
She believes that protecting our ocean is one of the most important things we can do to ensure a healthy future for all living things. That’s why she loves to use her skills as an artist to help spread awareness about ocean conservation and environmental issues, while also creating beautiful works of art.
We’re proud to showcase the sculptures of Courtney Mattison, whose work is as beautiful as it is meaningful.
Reef Sculptures & Coral Reef Inspired Ceramics Designed To Increase Awareness Of Ocean Conservation Issues
Courtney Mattison, a ceramic artist, and marine biologist create clay sculptures inspired by the beauty and fragility of marine life. She sculpts hollow forms by pinching together coils of clay and uses simple tools to texture pieces by hand. Her works mimic the repetitive growth of coral colonies, with hundreds of individual pieces finished and fired using a color palette of glazes that she has developed to reflect the vivid colors and varied textures of a healthy marine ecosystem.
Courtney’s ceramic sculptural works are created with the utmost care and attention to detail. Each piece is hand-thrown, glazed, and fired in a kiln. This process requires a significant amount of energy to power, ventilate and fire full kilns.
In an effort to reduce waste, and water consumption, purchase bulk materials and fire only full kilns, Courtney makes every effort to recycle materials whenever possible.
The idea is to raise awareness of the fragility of the coral reef by presenting these beautiful sculptures that harken back to their natural origins. Each piece represents a new life, something the oceans have an abundance of, except that they are endangered. We should make every effort to preserve these natural treasures before they disappear.
The sculptures are almost unbelievable in their immaculacy and complexity. Each of them took hundreds of hours to complete, and it’s difficult to comprehend the amount of time that it must have taken to design such a piece. The colors seem vibrant, yet they complement each other in a way that would make any artist jealous. Finally, not only do these masterpieces pay tribute to the beauty and fragility of life underwater, but they also take the fears away from anything associated with the ocean.
