Vanessa Davis describes herself as ‘The Skulltress’ and one look at her works conveys that this makeup and mixed media face artist is obsessed with skulls. What’s more, she uses her face as a canvas to showcase her facial art.
However, it’s not a simple skull, belonging to the human skeletal system, that she paints, but something incredibly elaborate with vibrant colors. And her collection of artistic face paint designs is really impressive.
It’s thanks of Vanessa’s expertise as a makeup artist and her cosmetic know-how, coupled with her vivid imagination, that she’s able to bring about a creepy variety of looks and that too on her own face! Using colorful cosmetics, she paints a variety of skull patterns that either cover her whole face or a part of it.
All intended to draw the attention of the viewers. However, her art is not confined to skulls alone, but includes other things too, such as koi fish, a butterfly’s wing, a rising phoenix, neon hologram, among many others.
The skull theme seems to be her personal decision. Asked why she’s so passionate about skulls, she says, “I noticed that the successful makeup accounts specialized in either a particular style or subject, so I chose skulls, which also worked as my heritage in Mexican and English. I’m fascinated by how skulls are portrayed in fashion, art and tattoo art, particularly by Alexander McQueen and Damien Hirst.”
Like for many other artists, Instagram too worked for Vanessa that helped her showcase her first attempt at her skeletal theme. This unique theme was lapped up by the viewers, catapulting her to fame. Today, she continues to improve her skull-centric art. Little wonder she enjoys a following of over 730,000 fans on Instagram alone.
