People who usually graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree usually take up either painting or sculpting. What Steve Butcher chose, after his four-year BFA course, was tattooing. And his is no run-of-the-mill tattooing, it’s one of the best in the world.
Why tattooing after BFA? According to Butcher, the teaching at the art school is too formal and didn’t allow him to paint what he actually desired. Tattooing, on the other hand, gave him the kind of freedom he sought. This freedom to express himself gave a fillip to his creativity and allowed him to experiment with newer styles.
As a consequence of this, as also his friend’s suggestion that he use his artwork on the human body, he became a full-fledged tattoo artist. He took up tattooing in the right earnest in 2011 by landing his first job at the Auckland City tattoo parlor called Streetwise. By and by, he developed his own style of creating hyper-realistic tattoos.
Butcher, who was born in Auckland, New Zealand, has created a niche for himself in the tattoo art world. Today, his surreal hyper-realistic tattoos are a rage. And he renders them both in full colors and in black and gray. It’s his passion for tattoo art that drives him to challenge himself and expand the limits of his artwork in all his works.
This Kiwi has many celebrities, including leading sports personalities, as his clients. It’s not surprising that he has over a million followers on Instagram alone.
