She certainly seems to be in love with birds and animals. This is why she turns these lovely creatures into incredible paper-cut works of art. Her name is Jo Chorny and she’s from Germany. She has chosen paper as a medium to convey her artistic outpourings. And she prefers to cut, rather than draw.

Chorny goes by the name of ‘peaceofpaper1’ on her Instagram account and on her ‘Etsy’ store page. This extremely talented paper cut artist first makes a simple pencil sketch of animal or any other subject on a piece of paper and then uses a scalpel to carve out the figure. This may take hours, depending upon the size and complexity of the creature being created.

And it’s not just Chorny’s paper cut forms that are breathtaking, but also the artistic way in which she presents them. Her unique way of presenting her work is to hold it against the sky and photograph it, making use of the contrast of dark and light. This certainly places her a cut above the rest.

Chorny explains, “I love the dramatic effect this gives, and the variations of colors and textures in the sky as a backdrop. I also like the shadows that my pieces cast. I normally set them in a box frame, so the shadow appears on the back giving the papercut a great 3D effect.” This certainly brings out the fine cuts to the fore in all their intricate and beautiful details.

Although paper cut art is nothing new, but in Chorny’s case her skill and presentation infuse a breath of fresh air to each and every work she creates, bringing her paper cut creatures to life. The good news you can not only buy her works but also commission a piece.
