Embroidery is an age-old art that has been refined by many present-day embroiders. One such embroidery artist is Katerina Marchenko, who is creating waves on the internet and has over 160,000 fans on Instagram alone.
This Moscow-based fabric artist stitches fantastic images on tulle. Rendering her embroidery painting designs on this fine cloth, she makes eye-catching artworks by clever use of color and shading.
Marchenko derives her inspiration from fashion and haute couture to create beautiful thread painting by hand that includes embroidered portraits, animals and anatomical studies. What adds to the allure of her embroidery is the amazing 3D effect she manages through her color shading and harmony. In all her creations, she gives sketching a miss and begins with contours to ultimately arrive at her final end product.
Marchenko describes her style as ‘organized chaos’ that involves a combination of many shades of threads. She prefers tulle, since it make embroidery “visually more voluminous”. Although she loves saturated colors that she integrates with harmonious colors, her endeavor remains not to make her creations too flashy.
Although Marchenko studied the subject of Home Economics in her school, its lessons held no special attraction for her. What’s more, all her school assignments, such as making an apron or drawing a landscape, were done by her beloved grandma. Her interest lay in the fashion world and from her student years itself, she started following the latest fashion trends.
Marchenko was inspired by the embroidered dresses of Valentino, Elie Saab and Dior. To realize her passion in embroidery, she attended Ecole Lesage School in Paris, France. On Her Etsy Profile, she explains, “When I’ve the opportunity to observe the creative development of the artist, to see how an idea turns into a complete result, for me, there’s no greater inspiration.”
