It is time movie set makers woke up to the remarkable creations of Joshua Smith if they’ve not already done so. This is because this outstanding miniature artist builds in-depth buildings and structures on the scale of 1:20 that seem straight out of cities, such as Hong Kong, Los Angles, Sydney and many more.
And it’s not only the perfect imitation of buildings, complete with graffiti and posters on the walls that are so incredible, but also the dust and debris were strewn around old buildings. His miniature houses realistically reflect the elements of the city, including its inhabitants and workers. What further lends to the realism are his thoughtful additions, such as a small table on the roof, a broken door leaning against the door frame, graffiti-tainted walls, street art, and suchlike things.
Smith, a former self-taught stencil artist based in Norwood, South Australia, has been at it for the past 18 years. His series on old and dilapidated buildings, that he has been working on for the last two years, look so real that they’ve to be seen to be believed. His reference for them were actual photos of buildings. He reproduced these using cardboard, MDF and plastic. For the exteriors, he selected the exact shades of paint and chalk pastels. He has recently completed a four-story building working eight to 16 hours a day.
It’s no surprise that Smith’s creations attracted the attention of people from all around the globe and tasted instant success on the internet. His works were showcased not only all over Australia in over 100 exhibitions, but also in many cities around the world, such as Berlin, Hong Kong, Kobe, Osaka, London, Paris, Palo Alto, Taiwan, New York, San Francisco, etc.
Smith established an art gallery in Adelaide, South Australia, called the Espionage Gallery. In this, he not only displayed his own works, but also those of emerging and well-established national and international artists. In its four years of existence, the gallery managed to showcase over 600 artists from over 20 countries. Smith enjoys a following of over 110,000 viewers on Instagram alone.
