Caralyn Edwards is indeed a rare breed of artists, who has resurrected fantasy artwork in the form of sculptors. The fantasy world of fairies and angels, wizards and magicians and what have you, always had a strange allure for this gifted artist.
Caralyn’s childhood, spent in Atlanta area with nine brothers and sisters, couldn’t have been easy. However, her determination to prove herself in the art world urged her to devote whatever spare time she could muster on learning sculpting. What started out as a hobby, soon became her passion. And her resolve found her improving at every stage. Today, she is an established artist and currently resides in Atlanta with her pet rabbit.
Caralyn’s fantasy artwork evolved slowly after trying out a variety of materials, such as pencil and ink on paper, oil paint on canvas. She also mastered software such as Photoshop and MS Paint. Today, she is proud of her custom professional work that she has rendered in Atlanta area. These include full-colour drawings, sketches and painted murals that she did for a child’s bedroom.
With the help of her sister, Caralyn was able to start her art business ‘Mystic Reflections’ in 2005. At that time, she maintained a small website and her artwork too included black-and-white sketches. She earned a little money selling them at craft shows. But, as her popularity grew, she decided to do something unique.
In 2007 she struck upon the idea of sculpting fairy sculptures. She created her first Myxies or fairy sculptures, along with animal pals and dragons by using an air-drying clay. She eventually graduated to using polymer clay. Over time, she was able to refine her materials, techniques and tools.
After trying for several years, Caralyn was finally accepted into the Dragon Con Art show in 2008. After this, there was no looking back for her and she has been included in this show every year since then.
Says Caralyn, “I’ve been fortunate enough to be accepted back every year, which has continuously made it my largest annual event.” The result of participating in Dragon Con Art show was that she got discovered by numerous smaller shows, who have approached her for becoming their featured artist.
It was thanks to Dragon Con that her popularity has risen manifold. Through this show, she has not only won laurels for her unique artwork but seven awards too till date for her various works. This has certainly acted as a great motivation for her to continue her amazing work.
With such achievements under her belt, it was not at all surprising that Caralyn quit her corporate job a few years ago to pursue her passion full time. This gave her an opportunity to perfect her craft. Her first experience as a contracted professional illustrator came when she was hired to illustrate her first children’s book, ‘The Adventures of Mend’.
Such is her love for her art that she hones and refines her skill on a daily basis. Little wonder her business is growing in leaps and bounds and she also enjoys a sizeable following on the social media.
