Frankly, what artist Dmitriy Bragin creates can scare the daylights out of anyone who happens to encounter it in a dark passageway! Well, he creates scary masks that he terms as steampunk-style face masks, that are inspired by steampunk. However, the term steampunk is a bit of a misnomer, since his masks do not have any moving parts.
Bragin creates face masks in a variety of designs – some cover the entire face, others only a part of it, while others are more like eyepieces. However, what is really unique about his masks is the metallic-looking finish. He creates his masks with texture fabricated from machine elements. These may include tiny gears, small watch parts, springs, camera lenses, and what have you.
Bragin hit upon this idea from the 19th Century steam-powered machinery, mechanical watches, handheld cameras, and the like. He buys these items from the local flea markets and uses their parts in his masks after dismantling them. His incredible imagination helps him in infusing intricate details of these yesteryear machinery parts onto his masks.
This artist from Ukraine uses a normal plastic mask as a base for his creation since it can be easily cut and reshaped. He then glues or screws the machine parts on it. These parts may be a camera lens or a watch gear or even a machinery part. He even procures parts from kids’ toys, such as children’s motorcycles, and other mechanical models. Although the parts may have been obtained from diverse sources, the end product is always stunning. Each mask seems cast from bronze or other metals, thanks to the acrylic paints that he layers and brushes to make the masks look heavy and solid.
Bragin’s mystifying face mask can transform anyone from a human to a man-machine hybrid, just as in sci-fi movies. The best part is these masks are much lighter and easy to wear, and each mask is one of a kind and there is no duplication. These masks are available on his online Etsy shop.
According to Bragin, these masks help create a personal image of the wearers that is unique and aesthetic, though in a scary way! So, if you want to turn into a cyborg and impress your friends, a steampunk cosplay mask is a must-have. Sadly, in these times of the face masks, steampunk masks can do very little to keep the virus away!
