He would have been like any other run-of-the-mill artist, despite graduating as a designer from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazilin 2010 and venturing into fashion and art. But his moment came when he became aware of the Plus Size movement.
Meet Eduardo Santos, a Brazilian artist from Recife, who likes to be called Edull. Currently working as a freelancer with digital and manual illustration, it was the Plus Size movement that caught his imagination. He totally empathized with overweight women, since he’s of the firm opinion that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. One has to learn to be comfortable in one’s own skin. According to him, it’s the media that successfully bombard our brains with that oh-so-perfect bodies and compels us to conform.
Since 2013, Santos has been addressing the specific plus size theme in his artistic projects. He admires curvaceous chubby bodies and says, “I’ve always liked chubby girls and also suffered from the prejudice they felt. I ended up discovering art as a way to show the world that a fat woman is a normal woman, just as beautiful as all the others.”
Santos tries to catch the world’s attention in order to make people accept and appreciate these plus size people through his incredible illustrations. He aims to fight prejudice that is shaped by present-day society and endeavors to spread the body positivity message through his works. His ultimate goal is to awaken the self-acceptance of fat women and remove the blindfold of the society to make them see what’s hidden by the mainstream media.
Santos has undertaken the mission to bring obese women into the limelight through his drawings and illustrations. For this, he chooses plus size celebrities and women from different walks of life and sketches them. His amazing illustrations of overweight women displays his passion for empowering and uplifting them. He then puts them up on the internet – in some cases the originals along with his illustrations.
One thing that stands out in his illustrations is they never display obesity as something obnoxious. Rather his renderings make such plus size women even more attractive and desirable, what with cute faces, attractive eyes and cutely curvaceous bodies.
That his popularity has grown is evident from the fact that women around the world commission him for such artwork. Little wonder his artwork collection has grown big, becoming a true celebration of curvy silhouettes and plus size beauties.
