The finesse with which she carves out intricate mesh from a sheet of paper is certainly mind-boggling. Seeing her work, she may be one among the best papercut artists in the world. Her name is Pippa Dyrlaga and she’s based in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, England.
Pippa loves the simplicity of a blank sheet of paper. Despite so many possibilities offered by it, this paper cutting artist and printmaker decided to communicate with it in a different way, that is, by creating papercut figures. Even though Pippa handcrafts her creations using traditional techniques, her works are always contemporary.
Hailing from Mirfield in West Yorkshire, England, Pippa spent her childhood on a canal boat. Her surroundings of rural landscape, waterways, and wildlife acted as inspiration for her work. Having a flair for art prompted her to pursue this field. She completed her degree in Contemporary Art Practice at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2006. Not content with this, she returned to the same university in 2011 to complete her MA in Art and Design and Curation.
It was her love for a paper that first started Pippa on the path of papercutting. In no time, she honed her papercutting skills to churn out works of exquisite beauty and finesse. All her works are hand cut from a single sheet of paper. She is quite methodical in her approach. She first draws her sketch on the paper and then cuts it out using a scalpel. This is certainly no easy work and may take hours, depending upon the intricacy of the work.
Today, Pippa works with global brands and local companies, such as Element Jewelry, Impression Originale, York University, and many more. She’s also a recipient of the Medaille de Bronze and the Prix du Jury Invite Medaille ‘Argent awards.
