Whereas most artists describe their art by the genre it belongs to, such as hyper-realistic, surrealistic, contemporary, and the like, BrooklynSnobs describes his art as ‘enchanting and strange’. Well, enchanting and strange it certainly is. His psychedelic characters are far from anything one has seen.
This illustrator and designer hit upon his strange name, BrooklynSnobs, to tell the world that he was once working in the hip and rich areas of Brooklyn in New York, USA. Although born and raised in New York, he claims to live all over the place, creating strange designs and illustrations.
This is probably because he lives by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”. And he has accomplished being himself in no small measure, the reason why his art is in a class of its own.
BrooklynSnobs uses mixed media and acrylic for his art and his tools are pen, ink, and digital means. His expertise lies in aesthetically combining the contrast of black and white. Just by limited colors, he’s able to create intricate patterns and details, turning shapes and figures into something unique, abstract, and strange. His works exude an air of simplicity, despite his complex, intricate and repetitive patterns. It’s his placement of shading and irregularities in the patterns that infuse depth and brings realism into the illustration.
BrooklynSnobs’ art is also thought-provoking. One illustration which shows a serpent coming out of a host’s body can be variously interpreted. Either the serpent is coming out of the host’s body or the serpent is simply allowing its host to consume it. This is what infuses an element of freshness in his works.
BrooklynSnobs, who enjoys a fan following of over 104,000 on Instagram alone, is probably inspired by Jiro Ono, who states in ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’, thus:
“Once you decide on your occupation…you must immerse yourself in your work. You have to fall in love with your work. Never complain about your job. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That’s the secret of success…and is the key to be regarded honorably”.
BrooklynSnobs, we’re all ears!
