Mention jewelry and the mind goes to adorable designs of pendants and earrings that people sport with such relish. Speaking of relish, here’s a jewelry designer who relishes food items as jewelry! Her name is Andrea Diaz and she makes stunning food jewelry.
This 27-year-old jewelry designer from Mexico had been an ardent lover of art since her childhood. So, it wasn’t surprising that she went on to join an art school. After graduation, her eureka moment came when she saw her school friend wearing cupcake earrings.
She hadn’t seen anything like it before and resolved to create something like this. She created a pair of pears out of air-dry clay, which didn’t last long since clay was not a good material for jewelry.
It was while researching on the internet that Diaz came across YouTube tutorials by Heather Wells, who not only taught her about the craft but also how to run an online business. In an email to awesomebyte.com, Diaz shares, “I started making food miniatures right after I graduated from my Fine Arts degree back in 2013, since that moment this cute jewelry became my obsession and from there it has become my full-time job and I couldn’t ask for a better one, I love every single minute of it.”
Diaz uses polymer clay, a plastic-like material, to hand-sculpt her miniature food articles. This material is durable. For hooks, studs, and chains, she uses 316L Stainless Surgical Steel, which is ideal for sensitive skin, since it’s cadmium and nickel-free. To date, she has created around 500 different types of savory foods and desserts.
Diaz also founded Andisa Charms, her Etsy shop, to sell her wares. This has become a family-run business. She told awesomebyte.com, “I work every day and my family has helped me a lot, my brother takes care of the entire design and image of my shop and my dad takes care of shipping. This small business is an effort from a happy working team.”
It’s not surprising that her food jewelry sells like hotcakes (pun intended!) and she enjoys a huge fan following of over 211,000 on Instagram alone.
