Ramon Bruin Creates Stunning 3D Optical Illusions WithOrdinary Pencil

We all know that anything drawn on paper is always 2D, that is, two-dimensional. But, here is an amazing artist who draws on paper with an ordinary pencil to create stunning 3D optical illusions! Meet Netherlands-based Ramon Bruin, 31, who is a self-taught and a versatile artist.

What Bruin does is to create pencil drawings on paper and photograph them at the exact right angle. This creates an optical illusion in which the sketch appears three-dimensional, seeming to leap off the page! Bruin is credited with inventing this style that he terms as ‘multi-layered illusion’ that basically involves a combination of drawing and photography.

Bruin draws on multiple sheets of paper that are interactive with each other. He then photographs them from an angle to give the illusion of being stacked on top of each other. His favourite tool is a graphite pencil, but he also uses colour pencils, inks, charcoals and acrylics for some of his creations.

Bruin flaunts a degree in airbrushing and creates airbrush art on different objects, such as motorcycles, guitars and canvas.Besides this, he also paints, using bold colours. But, it is photo-realism that has helped him push his boundaries and discover new techniques in the process.

On the strength of his experience of almost a decade in airbrushing and learning from other styles, Bruin has managed to establish the JJK Airbrush company. He delves only in customized work, whose sole purpose, according to him, is to “create kick-ass airbrush designs”!

Bruin states, “The art I make is what I like to call optical illusionism. It appears the drawing are 3D and actually leap off the page. It’s, of course, all optical illusions.” He will go to any length to achieve this effect, which includes the anamorphic technique, that is, drawing detailed, but distorted images that only come to life when photographed from the exact right angle.

With such a natural gift and innovative techniques, it is not surprising to find his fan following increasing by the day.
