Many artists make such realistic portraits, where the face seems to speak to the viewer. However, here’s a digital artist, in whose portraits it’s the eyes that speak! And not because they’re unnaturally enlarged or are based on real people, but because he’s able to infuse feelings into them.
Meet David Álvarez, a digital artist and animator from San José, Costa Rica. This 29-year-old incredible digital artist makes portraits based on real people with such huge expressive eyes that it really sets him apart from other artists.
David spent close to a decade in the digital art industry as an animator. It was when he decided to switch his focus to illustration and social media that he started becoming famous. When he posted his first digital ‘big-eyes’ picture of a real-life personality, it received a huge response from the viewers. As David’s posts grew on social media, so did his popularity.
This drove David to post a series of real persons’ portraits that he continues to do till today. It’s not at all surprising, he enjoys a following of over 270,000 fans on Instagram alone. To top it all, he achieved a viewership of 228,000 on Instagram in less than a year!
When David is not doing animation, he is focusing on his portraits. And this is no easy work. It takes him anything between four to seven hours to complete one portrait. He unfailingly posts one portrait of a real person daily on his social media account. And he doesn’t shy away from sharing his techniques, presenting them in video tutorials on his YouTube channel.
David’s tutorials are quite detailed and he announces them in his own inimitable style. A sample: “My tutorial on how to paint a mouth in Photoshop is up! This has been highly requested and it’s a very in-depth, step-by-step look into the whole process.”
