Most people run to the kitchen to get a scrubber to wipe out whatever has been spilt on the dining table or any other surface, but not Giulia Bernardelli. She possesses the creative eye to turn this ugly patch into works of art!
Little did this 27-year-old Italian artist, who earned her bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, realize that her real artistic talents will someday lie in turning spillages into art pieces.
According to Bernardelli, her creativity in turning spills into art comes from spur-of-the-moment imagination and is always unprompted. And she specializes in coffee spills!
For Bernardelli, it all began a year ago, when she accidentally spilt coffee on the table. Instead of running to get a scrubber to wipe it off, she got transfixed seeing the spillage and her mind conjured up all kinds of possibilities that this ugly splotch can be turned into.
It was probably at this moment she decided to become a ‘spill artist’. She reiterates this fact, when she says, “Everything that I needed was around me if I looked carefully. I decided to replace the paintbrush with what nature offered, such as leaves, fruit skins, food. All these elements feature different colours and textures.” The rest, as they say, is history!
If you are wondering whether she plans her work in advance, she doesn’t. She maintains, “I never plan my work in advance. For example, when I drink coffee, I reflect on the nuances that I could create if I turned it over on the table.”
It is her fertile imagination that provides impetus to her creative ideas.
Looking at her stunning works of art one realizes how intricate her brush strokes really are that convert ugly coffee or food splotches into something that has become a rage on the social media.
Bernardelli’s creations are only limited by her imagination. And what hits you immediately about her art is that nothing is contrived, everything is spontaneous and created with such ease and effortlessness.
The incredible gift that lets her compose such exquisite art is her unmatched visualization. She is able to gauge the potential of the spills in an instant and gets down to transform it into something most unexpected, almost at a whim. And her imagination is not only limited to spills, but also to chocolate smudges and what’s left at the bottom of the coffee mug after the coffee has been drunk!
Bernardelli’s whimsical art encompasses a wide array of subjects that range from imaginative scenes from fairy tales to famous faces and musicians. You will also find all kinds of figures created from spillages, such as portraits, animal figures, ship in choppy seas and what have you.It is certainly no wonder that she commands over 81,000 followers on Instagram.
Well, the next time you spill something on the table, try and emulate Bernardelliby creating something appealing and you might become a social media sensation like her!
