Marble Pillow Sculptures Look Like the Real Ones

If Håkon Anton Fagerås offers you a pillow to rest your head on, view it with suspicion for this soft-looking pillow is actually made from solid marble. This Norwegian sculptor makes it with such finesse that it can fool anyone into thinking it is stuffed with down feathers!

This amazing sculptor has gained expertise in manipulating marble to create detailed sculptures that completely capture the essence of the subject, be it the curves or wrinkles in a piece of cloth, or curls of a lock of hair, or other minute details. The end result is always life-like.

Fagerås joined the painting studio of the Norwegian figurative painter, Jan Saether, as an apprentice. However, he found sculptures being created in the studio next door more fascinating. So, he shifted to sculpting and enrolled himself at the Oslo National Academy of Arts in Oslo, Norway. He also learned much from the famous Italian sculptor, Marco Giannoni.

Fagerås’ first choice of sculpting material was marble, due to its fragility, coupled with solidity, that lent itself to detailed carving. Although his forte in sculpting is mostly human form, it is his Down series that has catapulted him to fame, since it was a unique take on marble sculpting.

By means of the standard sculpting tools, such as pneumatic hammer and other carving tools, Fagerås is able to create large white pillows, wrinkles, and all. The look is so realistic that it can befool anyone. The artist shares on artisticodyssey.com, “Even though a sculpture of a pillow often brings a smile to many people’s faces, I find the pillow a beautiful symbol of life; life begins and ends in bed, and some of life’s most beautiful and some of life’s hardest moments are spent there.”

Fagerås enjoys a viewership of over 191,000 on Instagram alone.
