Canadian Aboriginal Artist Jason Carter is a Celebrated Indigenous Painter and Sculptor

One of the most accomplished Aboriginal visual artists is Jason Carter of Canada, known for his amazing paintings and carvings. He has earned a name for himself as an Indigenous sculptor, illustrator, and public artist from Little Red River Cree Nation.

Carter draws his inspiration from the stories passed on by elders within his community through the years. His art depicts the essence of some of the characters of these stories that are steeped in traditional indigenous roots. In addition, he also creates new stories that are filled with wonder and morals and infuses life in them through his chosen mediums.

According to Carter, he divides his time equally between painting and carving. He shares on his website, “…I’ve been gifted the opportunity to express myself through two mediums, stone and canvas, and both I approach with humor and optimism….” Art provides him immense joy and acts as an outlet in the cynical world. He wants to pass on this joy to his viewers.

Jason Carter is credited with being the only Alberta artist to have his own solo show at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010.

Carter was raised in Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. He did double graduation from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and MacEwan University, both in Edmonton, Alberta. He is credited with being the only Alberta artist to have his own solo show at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010.

Today, Carter is a known name in the art world. He has major permanent installations, sculptures, and paintings in many public places and private collections. According to him, much of his craft comes from his innate ability to seek inspiration from the past and create bold and colorful works of art. In addition to painting and sculpting, he has also illustrated five children’s books and created permanent murals for Beaver Hills Park in Edmonton, among others. His huge painting adorns the Museum of Aboriginal Peoples’ Art and Artifacts of Canada.

Such is Carter’s fame that he was recognized as ‘Emerging Artist of the Year at the Mayor’s Evening of the Arts in Edmonton. He was also in the Top 40 Under 40 artists in Avenue Magazines. Many schools in Canada are currently studying him and his body of work.
