Dubai ‘Frames’ Itself In The Iconic Dubai Frame

As if Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the iconic 829.8-meter (2,722-foot) structure – the tallest in the world, was not enough, the city has come out with another gigantic marvel. This time it is the Dubai Frame.

The Guardian newspaper declares it the ‘the biggest picture frame on the planet’. And rightly so. This 150-meter (492-foot) tall colossus, located in Dubai’s Zabeel Park, is the brainchild of architect Fernando Donis.

This intriguing structure came into existence as a result of a design competition held by the Government of Dubai. The brief to designers was to create an emblem that promoted the new face of Dubai. Of the 926 entries received, Donis’ design was adjudged the best and was awarded the 2009 ThyssenKrupp Elevator International Award along with the prize money of US$100,000.

In designing the Dubai Frame, Donisreasoned that since Dubai was full of emblems, adding another one did not make much sense. So, he came up with the idea of framing all the Dubai emblems in a giant frame. His original thinking, that resulted in this design, was lapped up by an international panel of judges that included 11 international architects and two honorary jurors – HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the director general of Dubai’s municipality.

The 150-meter by 105-meter (492-foot by 344-foot) Dubai Frame uses reinforced concrete, steel, aluminium and glass. It has been provided with a 93-meter-long (305-foot-long) viewing bridge with glass-floored walkways that takes some guts to walk on, what with the sheer drop that can be seen through the clear glass floor!

Dubai Frame not only adorns Dubai’s skyline but also provides a panoramic view of the whole city. Yes, you can ascend this frame to the very top for the breathtaking view of all the amazing structures of the city. The frame is located in such a way as to split the city into two. You can view old Dubai on one side and modern Dubai on the other. Clearly visible is the old city of Deira, the tall skyscrapers of Sheikh Zayed Road and many others famous landmarks.
