Colombian Artist Creates Unique Glass Paintings That Both Intrigue And Delight

2D glass paintings are common enough, but turning them into 3D paintings is not only intriguing but downright fascinating. This is what Yosman Botero Gómez, who goes by the name of YoshBott on Instagram, does use his unique technique.

Gómez uses layers of plexiglass to create an optical illusion that presents the subject in 3D. The process may look easy, but it’s not. It requires imagination to part-paint the subject in layers on separate plexiglass plates and then aligns them to form a whole. Just have a look at his videos to know how he does it.

Gómez, who was born in the city of Cúcuta, Colombia in 1983, graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia. He’s presently based in Spain and, besides creating his glass paintings, he’s also studying for Doctorate of Artistic Production and Research at the University of Barcelona, Spain.

Gómez is a gifted artist, but his technique requires more than drawing and painting, it requires expertise in installation too. This is what makes his glass paintings so visually intriguing and full of depth. It certainly requires a deep understanding and imagination to know how the subject painted in parts on various plexiglass surfaces would come together in a sequential order to make up the whole image so accurately. The layers of plexiglasses attached to a sturdy frame add to the beauty of the paintings.

Gómez’s favorite subject is animals. He renders these creatures in 3D by overlapping precisely-placed layers of plexiglass in such amazing details that you can literally count the hair of the animals’ furs! This is because his hand paintings are so detailed with such minute details that even show individual strands of hair. Add to this the realistic colors with which he paints his animals and the expression he gives them to make them look like the real thing.

Gómez has held many solo exhibitions of his unique glass paintings all around the world in galleries, such as NOMAD Gallery, Berlin, Germany; BETA Gallery, Bogota, Colombia; Border Cultural Center, Mexico City, Mexico; Triumph Gallery, Moscow, Russia; and many more. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, both in the country and abroad.

Gómez is also a recipient of many awards that include First Place in National Prize for Culture, Antioquia University, Medellin, Colombia; First Place in ART > 35, Sala Parés, Barcelona, Spain, and many more.
