Gagosian is a contemporary art gallery that exhibits some of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries. To be able to showcase one’s works in this gallery is immensely prestigious but to be only 27 years of age to do so speaks volumes about the artist. This incredible artist is Anna Weyant, the youngest artist representing this gallery.
Weyant, born in Calgary, Canada, is no run of the mill artist; her works sell in millions of dollars. Take for instance her work titled ‘Falling Woman’ went for a whopping $1.6 million and ‘Summertime’ earned her $1.5 million. Little wonder this fame has made her one of the most sought-after artists in the global art world.
Surprisingly, Weyant had a limited exposure to art during her growing up days. But the artist in her could not be suppressed for long. Once she graduated in fine art from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, she did a six-month painting course at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. The sepia tones of the city influenced her style and she started using more muted shades.
Weyant moved to New York and assisted artist Cynthia Talmadge, who let her post her works on her Instagram account. She also introduced her to Ellie Rines, an art dealer and curator, and owner of the New York gallery ‘56 Henry’. Rines helped Weyant sell her initial works for a few hundred dollars. However, her big break came when she was featured on the cover of ‘New American Painters’.
The very next year Blum & Poe gallery in Los Angeles, USA, started representing Weyant’s works and sold them for around $50,000 each. About this time, she came into the notice of Larry Gogosian, founder of the billion-dollar art empire, who took her under his fold. Soon her paintings started selling many times their estimated price and went on to fetch millions of dollars.
Currently, she enjoys a fan following of over 84,000 on Instagram alone.
