Sean Charmatzterms his experimental images and animations as ‘explorations’ that he creates with his found objects observed in everyday life. Surprisingly, these have become social media sensations and have, in the process, gathered sizeable followership. At Instagram alone, he has over 830,000 fans!
Charmatz’s creations showcase his talent for design and storytelling, a result of his experience gained in the animation industry, where he has been working since 2005. He’s best known as a writer and director of ‘SpongebobSquarepants’. He was also involved in designing, storyboarding and developing shows for Disney and Dreamworks.
So, what’s Charmatz’s inspiration? He explains, “I love the magic of bringing life to drawings. It’s so fun to take nothing (meaning a blank piece of paper) and turn it into something that has feelings and moves.” Of course, he got hooked to animated characters since childhood through comics. His favorite comics being Garfield, Farside comics, Beavis and Butthead, Calvin and Hobbes, and Ren and Stimpy. The illustrations in these comics motivated him to draw a lot.
Regarding his own characters, Charmatz would rather let them live their own lives than control their outcome. And he’s all for turning his characters into retail products. Says he, “I’m open to any possibility if it feels right. Selling products with design and character is a cool challenge that I’m excited to do more of.”
According to Charmatz, the current trend of characters getting more and more abstract and androgynous will not only continue but also stretch in all directions. As for himself, he looks forward to continue evolving as an artist and venture into new territory, creatively.
The sheer variety of characters created by Charmatz is indicative of where he’s headed. There are many more creative ideas in his head, so watch his social media accounts for the latest ones. Charmatz is set to charm you all!
