As if tattoo artists weren’t enough comes a makeup artist who creates 3D optical illusions on hands and faces. Meet Luca Luce from Italy, who started out as a tattoo artist and went on to become a celebrity makeup artist and the first 3D hand painter – the first one in the world, as claimed by Luce. Says he, “I’ve become worldwide famous for inventing this new expression of 3D art on the palm of the hand, the media all over the world speaks and writes about me.”
And Luce is certainly not pulling a fast one. His mind-bending optical illusions on the palms are really mind-blowing. Such is his mastery over this form of art that he uses perspective and clever shadow placements for his photorealistic style of drawing to create 3D artwork. The end result is a surreal creation, complete with vivid, and at times gory, details.
Luce began his creative career as a designer and ended up as a makeup artist. Using these acquired skills, he started creating 3D optical illusions on the palm of his left hand. For painting these realistic pictures, he uses upmarket cosmetic brands as his medium. Not only does he paint his hand, but his face too that seem even more grotesque!
On his palm, Luce is fond of portraying tiny creatures and other objects. Some of the creations, combining the elements of both fantasy and horror, are so bizarre that they’ve to be seen to be believed. Since his creations are done up only in makeup and are impermanent, they do wear off after some time.
To preserve them for posterity, he documents his art by snapping selfies and posting them on his social media page and on YouTube channel in the form of videos. On Instagram alone, he has a following of over 93,000 fans.
