This Artist Uses Wet-In-Wet Technique To Paint Both Land And Sea Animals

If you happen to watch Cindy Lane paint in one of her videos, you’ll certainly be mesmerized by it. The way she makes the paint flow into her illustration, imparting the exact hue that she desires, is something to be seen to be believed. This is what makes the wet-in-wet technique of this award-winning artist and illustrator stand out.

Based in Perth, Australia, this artist uses watercolor, acrylic paint, pastels, ink and pencils for her paintings. But, before she gets down to it, she prepares the canvas by dusting and wiping it with a damp lint-free cloth. She then coats the ground on the canvas by means of a damp foam roller and leaves it to dry completely. She then transfers the drawing on the canvas with the help of water-soluble graphite pencils that disappear under the watercolor paint.

Lane uses her paints straight from the tube or from a palette, taking care to evenly distribute the pigment. The wet-in-wet technique allows the paint the freedom to move freely and settle in the desired places on the illustration. By tilting, she creates areas of high tonal contrast. Once the painting is complete, she protects it from dust, moisture and UV rays by sealing it with fixative and varnish. She prefers a matte or satin varnish to retain the look of the painting, though a gloss varnish is as good.

Lane was inclined towards art from the very beginning and discovered her artistic talents in early childhood itself. Living by the beach in sunny Perth, she was always close to nature and its inhabitants. It’s both the land and sea creatures that inspired her and prodded her to reproduce them on canvas.

Lane enrolled in James Cook University, Queensland, Australia to hone her artistic skills. After graduating, she commenced her career as an artist. So popular are her works that they’ve been published and licensed around the world. Her works have become collectors’ items and are held in private, corporate and government collections.

Lane enjoys a viewership of almost 450,000 followers on Instagram alone and many more on the internet.
