Wearable Macramé Creations Of This Dutch Sculptor Are Really Amazing

Ever heard of macramé? Well, it’s the art of knotting string in patterns to make decorative articles. And how Sandra de Groot does it is certain to leave you agape! This Dutch artist creates soft macramé sculptures in the form of elaborate headpieces and ornate armor-like tops.

Sandra macramé artwork is a delightful combination of sculpture, craft, and architecture and she has titled this wearable artwork as ‘TEXTILE-kNOTs’. She doesn’t compromise on quality and the ropes she uses in her textile forms are composed of high-quality cotton. Using good material helps to keep the inherent shape and structure of her creations.

About her works, Sandra has this to say, “The sculptures evolve according to an inner logic that’s all mine. Only when the sculpture attains a textile form of attraction and becomes self-contained, I literally let go of the ropes.” Her aim is to make the viewers aware of the intense process that goes into creating each sculpture, which uses a huge quantity of ropes and knots.

Sandra, who studied at Minerva Art Academy in Groningen, Netherlands, started creating these hair sculptures in the 1990s. She has her own studio, where she mentors intern artists and designers and has founded atelier CHAOS.
