If you’re into funny comics, you must be lapping them up whenever you can lay your hands on them. Now, Wawawiwa comics bring a breath of fresh air into the comic scene with its simple and straight humor that rarely takes more than one frame to convey. The creator of these cute and funny comics is Andres Colmenares, a Columbian illustrator.
The humor in Andres’ comics is certainly unique and it’s certainly surprising to see how this illustrator infuses funniness in unusual places and creates oddball entities, that range from animals, heavenly bodies, fruits, vegetables and whatever his fertile imagination can imagine, to deliver it.
So, how did Andres begin his comical journey? Says he, “I started in 2009. I arrived at Miami in 2008 to go to college, but at the time I didn’t know anyone there, so I started illustrating cute animals as a hobby. It became an obsession.”
By his own admission, he loves to explore funny comics, ones that others can relate to. For this, he is forever searching for original ideas, in terms of subjects and humor, for his superbly crafted cartoons. Unfortunately, some of his animal drawings have managed to offend people, especially the ones with references to religion or politics. These he totally avoids now and considers them his least favorite subjects.
Although the humor contained in Andres’ comics is quite evident, he’s modest about it. Asked why he thinks Wawawiwa cartoons strike a chord with his audience, he says, “I really don’t know. I guess people enjoy things that give them some kind of escape from reality and that’s what I try to do with Wawawiwa…create space where people can have a great time and forget about their issues.”
Andres enjoys a following of over 110,000 fans on Instagram and also offers enamel pins and stickers of his most popular comics for sale.
