Artists usually capture scenic beauty that nature abounds in, such as mountains, lakes, seashores, the setting sun and the like. But here’s an artist, Wanjin Gim, who has acquired mastery in sketching the human body in all its myriad poses.
This Seoul-based artist not only creates form and gesture of the human body but highlights them by using complex layers of color and lighting. His uniqueness lies in the human poses he depicts in his sketches that are far from traditional.
Asked about his work, this is what Wanjin had to say, “I’m interested in expressing body temperature and skin smell and am studying the relationship between color and energy (Qi) for my work…I usually use oil pastel and colored pencils. They both have limited colors, so I need to overlap them to produce a color that I like. Even if I can’t express the color that I intend to make, I’m satisfied with the exceptional effect coming from the imperfectness.”
Wanjin, since his very childhood, was passionate about drawing. He went on to study animation and graduated from the Korea National University of Arts, Seoul, South Korea. His current style is inspired by the works of painter and draftsman Lucian Freud. He currently resides and works in Seoul.
Wanjin continues to amaze the world with his detailed human drawings. Little wonder he enjoys a following of over 2,80,000 fans on Instagram alone. Prints of his drawings are available on his online store.
