‘Wire Magician’ Thrills Viewers With Incredible Wire Sculptures Displayed In Public Places’

Spenser Little is a ‘wire magician’. No, he doesn’t make wires disappear, but cuts turn and twist them into incredible sculptures. What makes his sculptures stand apart from others is the fact that they playfully interact with their surroundings to make a statement.

This Southern Californian wire sculptor has been sculpting with wire for close to 15 years now. It was probably the influence of his father, a mechanical engineer for the government, who even wrote books on metal technology, that got him started with wires. A self-taught artist, morphing wires into creative shapes and complex portraits came naturally to him.

Little credits his fertile imagination to problem-solving that he developed playing chess and thinking out illustrations. This has enabled him to try his hand at larger and more complex pieces. He currently works out of his studio in Little Italy.

Little uses a pair of needle-nose pliers for cutting and bending rigid wires into desired shapes. Most of his pieces are made from a single continuous piece of wire, but some are made up of multiple pieces and some even have moving parts. It’s not only his expertise with wire sculpting, but his tremendous imagination that helps him in creating works that simply awe the viewers.

Little works have not only been exhibited in numerous gallery shows but also installed on lamp posts and in other public domains around the world. It’s the surprise element that really impresses the viewers. He leaves his wire sculptures in places for the public to discover, such as the Eiffel Tower, deep caves and high above the streets.

Little’s wire works are gaining attention on the internet. On Instagram alone, he has over 19,000 followers and counting. What’s more, you can buy select pieces of his works from Thinkspace Gallery.
