She Turns Her Paper Cutting Skills Into Incredible Works Of Art

She describes herself as an obsessive paper cutter, tea drinker and reader with a fondness for pretty things and soft slippers, and also her cat, Lucy. And it shows, the obsession for paper cutting, I mean!

She’s Sarah Trumbauer, who grew up in a Dutch family in Pennsylvania, USA. She elaborates, “My mom’s family is Pennsylvania Dutch and she introduced me to scissor cuts when I was growing up.” Little wonder paper cutting is in Sarah’s genes, the reason why she took up the tradition of scissor cuts early in life. Her love for this art was such that it compelled her to enroll in the Corcoran College of Art & Design, where she learned to draw and photograph.

Armed with this added knowledge, Sarah returned to paper cutting with a renewed zest to experiment with new mediums and create beautiful works. Holding a pair of scissors instantly rejuvenated this childhood passion of hers and she took it up in a big way. Says she, “I instantly fell back in love with this medium and found it opened so many creative doors for me.”

Sarah’s paper cut works are intricate and she’s comfortable with any kind of drawing, including cutting out words for all kinds of invites. Almost everything inspires her, be it flowers, leaves, children’s stories, fairy tales and even art nouveau. It’s her unique touch that enables her to create original and highly detailed cut paper designs.

Sarah begins her work with a drawing that she cuts by hand with the help of an x-acto knife. She uses a graduated color backing paper to highlight her cutwork. And her art is not only confined to frames and cards but is wearable too. She creates elegant, nature-inspired necklaces and other pieces of jewelry. Her works are up for sale and can also be commissioned.
