Her Imaginative Mind Made This Woman ‘A Classy Clay Artist’

Poor in studies, but great at doodling due to her over-imaginative mind, was how Dayna Corbitt grew up. By her own admission, she was a terrible student at the school. She used to immerse herself in her own imaginative world, rather than pay attention to what’s been taught!

It wasn’t at all surprising that Dayna took up art and sculpting to escape from studies. She went in for clay as her main medium and learned how to sculpt using polymer clay. She also took up needle felting, “…because I wanted to make dolls with clay faces and soft bodies.” For her, needle felting was like sculpting with wool. She also began making clay on wood paintings.

Although Dayna held on to a job for some time, she took the bold step of quitting it in favor of becoming a full-time artist. She also changed locations from Seattle, Washington to Olympia, the capital of Washington state, to enjoy a less crowded and peaceful environment.

Dayna improved her sculpting and learned the tricks of the trade from the internet. This self-taught method helped her to hone her unique style. And her inspiration remains her imaginative childhood mind and the beauty and wonder that surround her.

Soon, Dayna’s creations started getting noticed on her social media accounts. This prompted her to initially open her online shop with Etsy in 2013, but later she created her very own online shop called WhimsyCalling. This shop showcases all her handmade objects of art put up for sale. Such was the response to her first show that all her paintings sold out completely.

Today, WhimsyCalling takes up all her time, since she has to devote anywhere between 40 and 60 hours a week on her works. Her constant desire is to create something that ignites the imagination of her inner child and make her smile.

My name is Meera. I am 10 years old and I am in Grade Four. This year we are having something called Genius Hour/Passion Project. Each student has to create a presentation to present to the class.
