When you look at Joshua Dunlop’s animals and you’d think they’re either some creatures from the ‘Jurassic Park’ movie or some new animal species! Such is his detailed renderings of these strange creatures, which he lovingly refers to as his ‘Pokémon Zoology’.
The unique idea of creating these creatures came to Dunlop when he was learning 3D modelling. It was that period in time when Pokémon was a rage that later also appeared as Pokémon Go. He developed Pokémon in real life and put them online and within no time his bizarre creations went viral and became so popular as to make him set up his ‘Pokémon Zoology’ project, just to cater to his diehard fans.
“Just after I learnt 3D modelling I wanted to practice my new skills. Pokémon go was really big at the time so I decided to do the starters in a realistic way. I put them online and they went viral. Ever since my fans have wanted to see more so I turned it into the ‘Pokémon Zoology’ project” Joshua Told AwesomeByte.
Dunlop, born in London is now settled in Surbiton, London, England. Since his very childhood, he was passionate about art. This love for art led him to earn his Masters in Concept Art and Animation from Teesside University in Middlesbrough, UK. He gives full credit to his university for getting some incredible opportunities.
Although Dunlop claims to be entirely self-taught in a variety of techniques, his unquenchable thirst for learning newer things introduced him to 3D sculpting that he currently renders in his own unique style as a freelancer. He has honed his skills in 3D sculpting with special reference to light and color, design and composition.
It’s Dunlop’s mastery over the medium that allows him to create realistic and visually powerful work. His tools are blended elements of digital painting and photo manipulation, which he expertly uses to retain the visual aesthetics of his artwork.
Dunlop is not only a master of his craft, but is also closely associated with the film industry, both in front and behind the camera. This exposure has helped him in developing his communication skills and a strong work ethic, as also made him adept at meeting tight deadlines.
On artstation.com Joshua explains, “I’ve always had a passion for film, television and games and I’ve aspired to create unique and interesting artwork. With the current quality of today’s technology, I feel its potential is almost limitless, which is incredibly exciting and inspiring.”
That Dunlop is inspiring the world is evident from his Instagram page that has a current viewership of over 190,000 followers and counting. Joshua Dunlop Etsy shop is also doing brisk business in selling the prints of his artwork.
