Chow’s Creative Take On ‘Popular Cartoon Characters’ Makes His Tee Shirts A Collector’s Item

Chow Hon Lam is a gifted artist, illustrator, tee shirt designer and surprisingly calls himself the ‘Flying Mouse’! His cartoon creations bring a smile to the face since he portrays the popular superheroes and other famous cartoon characters in a totally different light.

Sample this, his collection of cartoons depicting how superheroes and other popular characters would use their powers in sports will have you in splits. In one frame, he has Spiderman standing in front of the football goal post, which he has closed by spinning the web in the goal opening! In another, he shows Captain America participating in the discus throw with his shield.

Needless to say, this is creativity at its best. And Chow manages to transfer this creativity on to tee shirts. For him, a tee is like a blank canvas on which to tell a story and each of his designs do tell a story. Little wonder, Chow is in the limelight for his creations and has managed to sell over 100,000 tee shirts featuring his designs. A testimony to how tremendously popular are Chow’s tee shirts.

Chow, presently living in Kuala Lumpur, had started an ambitious project called FlyingMouse365 in 2010. Under this project, he released one design per day for the entire year. For this, he had to refuse job offers and other commissions, since thinking out a new design within 24 hours is a challenge even the best cannot handle. And to do so for an entire year calls for real creativity, not to mention patience and dedication.

Recipient of many prestigious awards, Chow’s talent has drawn a host of celebrities and high-profile clients that include Reebok, Nike, Air Asia Airlines, Martell VSOP, WeChat, Lotus F1 and Dave Matthews Band. Chow’s fans wait with great anticipation for his next burst of creativity.

The Doodling Couple Finds A Better Alternative To Selfies To Take Instagram By Storm

Abang and Neng may not be your regular comic book or cartoon characters, but as of now they are making waves the world over of the Instagram kind! They are the creation of an Indonesian couple, Andreas and Felicia Hutabarat. While Felicia loves to doodle and has created these two characters, Andreas is a passionate photographer. The two together have presented their talents in a most unique way.

The two have named their project ‘Doodledeux’, meaning doodle duo, and showcase the two characters – Abang and Neng – in different settings, such as restaurants, beaches, museums, street fairs, aquariums and other spots. What a selfie accomplishes for people visiting different places, in their case, it is these two characters that replace them on their travels and visits to various places.

Once this couple chooses a location, say a beach, Felicia draws the two characters that is appropriate for the setting, that is, wearing swimsuits, and makes a cut-out of her doodle. Andreas holds the two cut-out characters in front of his camera with the chosen background as a backdrop and clicks the picture. The two cartoon characters, superimposed against real backgrounds gives this creation a unique appeal. These miniature caricatures of Abang and Neng have certainly endeared themselves to their Instagram fans.

How did Felicia and Andreas stumble upon this idea? The first Instagram post of the couple clarifies it, thus, “We were just having our regular date over cups of coffee when we suddenly had an idea on documenting our journey in a different way.” Doodledeux project helps them to share their story as a couple with the help of Abang and Neng.

This couple is certainly unstoppable, since they relentlessly snap picture of the two caricatures wherever they visit, be it aquarium, sightseeing in a new city or just having a coffee in a coffeehouse. By showing Abang and Neng traveling, eating and having fun, they document their own travel in an interesting and different way that their Instagram followers have fallen in love with.

There is no doubt that Felicia’s hand drawn characters have taken a life of their own and their fans wait with bated breath as to how they will craft a doodle deux, where will they go next and how will they be captured by Andreas’ camera. Since, both Felicia and Andreas are fond of Bali – the beach, the food, the people and all those favorite places where one can hang out – you can be rest assured of its featuring prominently in their future Instagram offerings.

Noel Cruz’s Celebrity Doll Repaints Become A Rage

You must have heard of or seen wax sculptures of celebrities, but have you ever imagined dolls in the likeness of celebrities! This is exactly what Noel Cruz does, this versatile and distinguished repaint artist has created doll masterpieces inspired by models, such as Gene, Tyler, Sydney and much more. Little wonder, Noel has built a reputation and a sizable following for his character and celebrity-based dolls.

People love Noel’s creations that possess an uncanny resemblance to people they represent. He gets into intricate details to infuse a natural lifelike essence in the lifeless figurines. With every creative work, Noel raises the bar by attempting to impart a freshness to all his creations. Of course, Noel Cruz’s doll’s price varies with the kind of details it includes.

Noel’s specialty is his repaints that are a new take on the common mass-produced dolls. For example, when the doll of Selena Quintanilla, the singing legend, was created, it turned out beautiful but did not exactly catch her spirit. Noel took it upon himself to give this doll a makeover.

To give Selena doll a more realistic look, Noel replaced the original body with Mattel Fashion Model Barbie body, which according to him, was a scale-wise better fit. The original body was loose and not scale appropriately. For the face, he resorted to three-dimensional repainting, shading, and highlighting of eyebrows, lips, and eyes. This brought the Selena doll to life. Is it any wonder that this repainted doll went for a whopping one thousand dollars on eBay!

Such is the beauty of his repaints that no two are exactly alike. With his focus on both aesthetics and likeness, Noel has developed a style of his own that can be seen on hundreds of dolls that include some unique and exotic originals, as well as, most recognized celebrities.

For his creative mind and unique dolls, Noel Cruz, the artist, has made a mark among collectors and artists alike. His dolls are now lapped up by private collectors, as these creations are no less than masterpieces of the great artists.
