Sand Artist Sudarshan Pattnaik Wins Gold In 10th Moscow Sand Art Championship

Sudarshan Pattnaik has become a household name in India for his outstanding sand sculptures. The sand artist is renowned for his skills and ideas that he translates magnificently into the sand to bring it to life.

His reputation was recently vindicated when he displayed his prowess with sand in Russia where he won a gold medal for the second time running in the 10th Moscow Sand Art Championship. The competition was held from April 22 to 28, 2017 at Kolomenskoye in Moscow.

The theme of the competition was ‘The world around us’. A total of 25 sculptors from all over the world, including Pattnaik, participated in it. It was a tough competition that not only judged the skills of the sand sculptors but also their imaginative use of sand.

Pattnaik went with the Indian theme of Lord Ganesha that conveyed the message, ‘Go Green’. His outstanding work was appreciated both by the public and the jury that was convened for the competition.

The prize comprising a gold medal was awarded to Pattnaik by Pavel Menikov, the chief organizer of the event, in a befitting ceremony. Last year too Pattnaik won a gold medal in the same competition and oodles of appreciation from the connoisseurs of art and sculpture. He had sculpted Mahatma Gandhi on the theme of ‘World Peace’.

Pattnaik is no stranger to fame, his sand castle on the Puri beach in Odisha entered the Guinness World Records as the tallest in the world. His talents have been recognized both in his country and internationally. In 2014, he was conferred the Padma Shri by the President of India in recognition of his talents and contribution to the art.
