Mention street art and the mind goes to the walls of buildings being adorned by colorful art. However, this artist uses a different canvas. Instead of the walls, he literally adorns the street surface! Yes, he paints large illustrative murals on unconventional surfaces that may range from parking lots to skate parks to the road surface. Of course, his giant art needs to be viewed from up above to fully appreciate his efforts in making it.
This street artist is Kitt Bennett, based in Melbourne, Australia, who specializes in illustration and murals. He depicts a variety of characters that includes skeletons, people, objects in contorted poses. Some of them look as if they’ve fallen from the sky. The sheer dimensions of his murals and the area they cover are really astounding.
It comes as no surprise that Bennett requires large buckets of paint and rollers to cover those areas, not only to paint the characters but also to give depth to them by highlighting and outlining. His inspiration is the people around him and he translates observational drawings of his surroundings into murals from clients and collectors.
The art bug had bitten Bennett since childhood and his passion drove him to earn a degree in Bachelor of Illustration in 2014. After this, he worked as a freelance artist and muralist for Juddy Roller Studio. Today, he has created a separate niche for himself as a muralist and has exhibited his works in numerous group shows. He has also held a solo exhibition in a public toilet on Smith Street in 2015.
According to Bennett, his work is often conceptually driven as exploring topics of individuality, existence and the mysterious phenomena that surround us inspire him to create art. Over 32,000 fans on Instagram alone is a testimony to the growing popularity of his form of art.
