This Japanese Illustrator Creates His Art Part-By-Part

Jumpei Kawamura is a Japanese illustrator, who began his career in art in 2000. Born in Kyoto, Japan, he has a vast range of creations to his credit that includes clothing, shoes, movie posters, CD covers, DVD jackets, catalogs and many more. However, his main claim to fame is shoes and designer clothing.

Says he, “I do my own drafting and cut the illustration into parts to form the complete picture of the art subject. This done, I review it. If it passes my scrutiny, I pass it on for sewing.” What he actually does is to first make an illustration of, say, a shoe and then divides it into its various parts, much like parquet. He then cuts them out and pastes them together to form a whole. His illustration style is simple and lends itself to splitting and cutting.

Kawamura has experimented with everything from clothing to shoes to posters to packaging and even to culinary dishes. His rendition of a hamburger is particularly interesting, where he creates all the layers in a hamburger separately, such as the chicken patty, tomato slice, cheese slice and different types of sauces. He then puts them together to form a 3D hamburger. Likewise, he also illustrates designer dresses of famous international brands.

Kawamura has contributed immensely to advertising, creating campaign visuals for brands, such as FM802, HIV/AIDS education, Keihan Electric and Nissan Wingroad, and illustrations/posters for BS Green Channel, Belle Source, Bookmark, and many more. He also did the entire illustrations of Hikone Castle Resort & Spa quarterly magazine ‘Castle Guide’ and also designed Resona Bank Cash Card.

As far as movie posters are concerned, he has designed the posters for movies, such as Revival Blues, Koiiro Sooiro, and a few others. He has also designed CD covers for Yuri’s ‘Love Respect Harmony’, Sony Music’s ‘Street’, ‘Garlic Toast’, and ‘Dragonfruit Moon. His DVD jackets include BATI-OLIC’s ‘Nippon in the groove’.

There is really no stopping this multi-talented illustrator, who is adept at sketching all kinds of subjects in his unique style. His art has been showcased in innumerable exhibitions and is gaining all round appreciation on the internet too.
