Jonty Hurwitz’s Works are a Confluence of Art and Science

There are many instances in the world of art, where one finds art blending with science. However, what Jonty Hurwitz does is really mind-boggling. He creates scientifically inspired artworks and anamorphic sculptures, using cutting-edge technology. Just sample Jonty Hurwitz nano sculpture. It is the smallest human form ever created using nanotechnology. Little wonder his works are internationally recognized.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Hurwitz was always passionate about art. However, he graduated with B.Sc. (Electrical Engineering) from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and gained expertise in many fields. He ultimately turned to sculpt and created his first sculpture titled ‘Yoda and the Anamorph’. It went on to win the People’s Choice Bentliff Prize of the Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery. This prize was the first in the series of prizes and honors he would receive during the course of his artistic journey.

“Jonty Hurwitz frog” is one of his creations that came about when his gallerist in Lausanne sent him a picture of the Red-Eyed Tree Frog. Being passionate about frogs, he could not refuse to create its adorable sculpture. Although he has many unique sculptures to his name, his series of nano sculptures is what caught the attention of both the art and scientific community.

Art critic, Estelle Lovatt, sums up the impact of Hurwitz’s artwork on the art world, thus, “If Leonardo Da Vinci were alive today, he would have been doing what Jonty is doing. He would have been using algorithms. No one else works like him today. His art is the mix between the emotional and the intelligent, and that’s what gives it that spark.”

Hurwitz installed his first large-scale work in the Italian village, Colletta di Castelbianco. He was made the ‘Artist in Residence’ by Savoy Hotel in London, where he stayed put for several months and created the iconic mascot ‘Kaspar the Cat’. His anamorphic work was blogged as ‘The best of 2013’ by the American Art and Culture magazine.
