This Woodcarver Carves Figures And Objects As If They Are Trapped Within Wooden Fabric

Seeing the works of Tung Ming-Chin, an incredible sculptor proves one point: there’s no limit to one’s imagination. While most woodcarvers aim to make figures and objects in their original likeness, Tung goes a step further. He visualizes how a figure or object would look if it were trapped in the fabric.

Sample Tung’s work in which a face and hands are enclosed inside the stretched fabric that has been chiseled out of wood and smoothened to give it that look. In one of his other works, the stretched fabric displays a crouched figure whose rounded spine and feet are pressing against the wood fabric. There are many more such imaginative and realistic works that are exceptionally beautiful and thought to provoke.

Tung, born in Changhua, Taiwan, is a Bachelor of Fine Arts from College of Fine Arts, Taipei National University of Arts and also Master of Fine Arts from Graduate School of Plastic Arts, from the same university. He honed his woodcarving expertise in Sanyi Wood Carving Training Camp for gifted students in 2013.

Today, Tung is a celebrated sculptor and has held a number of solo exhibitions like ‘Inner Truth’ at ARTHIS FINE ART, Taichung, ‘Beyond Relationship’ at Fu-Guei-Sanyi Arts & Culture Ltd. Co., Miaoli and many more. He has equally contributed to many group exhibitions in Taiwan.

Tung is a recipient of many awards and honors, such as Merit Awards of the 5th Yi-Ding Cup Chinese Woodcarving Creative Competition (2013); Huang-Xi Award in 3D Section, the 13th Huang-Xi Fine Art Exhibition (2012); First Prize of Taiwan International Wood Sculpture Competition (2011); Quan-Xing Award in 3D Section, the 12th Huang-Xi Fine Art Exhibition; Gold Prize of the 13th YULON Woodcarving Innovation Awards, and many more.

It’s not surprising that Tung’s works are being appreciated across the globe and have become popular on various art websites on the internet.
