This Embroiderer Has Costume Designers Queuing Up For Her Incredible Needlework

Some people are so gifted they don’t have to struggle to figure out their calling in life. One such amazing person is Laura Baverstock, who probably knew what she’s going to be when she grows up. And lo! She grew up to become a specialist hand embroiderer, textile artist, and illustrator, whose works, today, are sought all around the world.

Just to give an idea of how good an embroiderer Baverstock is, her embroidery work on costumes in the 2018 movie ‘Mary Queen of Scots’, contributed towards earning an Oscar nomination for a costume designer, Alexandra Byrne. She has many more laurels to her credit.

It goes without saying that Baverstock was madly passionate about needlework since her childhood days. This prompted her to study at the Royal School of Needlework, Surrey in the UK and earn a BA (Hons) Degree in Hand Embroidery for Fashion, Interiors, and Textile Art. Afterward, she set her sights on the film and fashion industries.

Baverstock developed a style of her own, wherein she combined the traditional stitching techniques with her contemporary design practice. Her inspiration comes mainly from nature, as also from various insignias that she copies from the originals or creates from her imagination.

Before Baverstock commences her work, she minutely studies the subject to be embroidered, taking the help of illustrative work and photography, and develops it using her own ideas. She, then, renders it into an embroidered piece using colored or metallic threads of gold, silver, and copper. Her remarkable intricately embroidered animals and insects are much in demand from costume designers the world over.

Baverstock’s list of clients includes Alexander McQueen, HBO, Legendary Entertainment and Nicholas Oakwell Couture. Her works can also be seen in the movie ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. She is a Trade Freeman in the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers.
