Her name is Ruby Thursday More and her claim to fame is her hand-embroidered line of intricate floral necklaces and abstract earrings that contain the typical essence of the Philippines, where she’s based. Her work is inspired by her memories of island life. Little wonder many Filipinos get nostalgic and feel connected with where they come from after seeing her creations.
Although Ruby started out as a freelance photojournalist, she had to give it up when she became pregnant. It’s then that she started exploring what else she loves doing and discovered she enjoyed drawing and working with fabric and colors. She finally got hooked to embroidery and never looked back.
It comes as no surprise that hand embroidery is her favorite, since, by her own admission, she’s a very detail-oriented person and embroidery fits perfectly as her favorite craft. She opened Thursday Craft Love to market her exquisitely detailed creations that include embroidery necklace pendants and embroidery jewelry pendants.
Color inspires Ruby and she preserves any new shade or hue she encounters by taking its photo for later reference. It’s these unique color shades that she infuses in her creations of embroidered pendants and earrings. Her obsession with burnt orange can be seen in her Isla earrings and her Aria necklace was created out of her vivid memories of gathering wildflowers with golden sunsets. Her Rosa necklace reminds many Filipino immigrants of their roots.
Ruby is quite methodical in creating her products. To make her floral designs, she first chooses the color and immediately starts stitching. If she feels happy with the results, she continues to complete the design. She also records the color of threads and number of strands in a sketchbook for later use. She also sketches her geometric designs by hand and then refines them into patterns on a computer that can be traced on the fabric.
Ruby follows her routine of stitching every day, even for an hour. If she has to go somewhere, she takes her work along. She makes use of Thursday Craft Love and Etsy to sell her modern hand embroidery designs online.
