The Doodling Couple Finds A Better Alternative To Selfies To Take Instagram By Storm

Abang and Neng may not be your regular comic book or cartoon characters, but as of now they are making waves the world over of the Instagram kind! They are the creation of an Indonesian couple, Andreas and Felicia Hutabarat. While Felicia loves to doodle and has created these two characters, Andreas is a passionate photographer. The two together have presented their talents in a most unique way.

The two have named their project ‘Doodledeux’, meaning doodle duo, and showcase the two characters – Abang and Neng – in different settings, such as restaurants, beaches, museums, street fairs, aquariums and other spots. What a selfie accomplishes for people visiting different places, in their case, it is these two characters that replace them on their travels and visits to various places.

Once this couple chooses a location, say a beach, Felicia draws the two characters that is appropriate for the setting, that is, wearing swimsuits, and makes a cut-out of her doodle. Andreas holds the two cut-out characters in front of his camera with the chosen background as a backdrop and clicks the picture. The two cartoon characters, superimposed against real backgrounds gives this creation a unique appeal. These miniature caricatures of Abang and Neng have certainly endeared themselves to their Instagram fans.

How did Felicia and Andreas stumble upon this idea? The first Instagram post of the couple clarifies it, thus, “We were just having our regular date over cups of coffee when we suddenly had an idea on documenting our journey in a different way.” Doodledeux project helps them to share their story as a couple with the help of Abang and Neng.

This couple is certainly unstoppable, since they relentlessly snap picture of the two caricatures wherever they visit, be it aquarium, sightseeing in a new city or just having a coffee in a coffeehouse. By showing Abang and Neng traveling, eating and having fun, they document their own travel in an interesting and different way that their Instagram followers have fallen in love with.

There is no doubt that Felicia’s hand drawn characters have taken a life of their own and their fans wait with bated breath as to how they will craft a doodle deux, where will they go next and how will they be captured by Andreas’ camera.
