Cyril Lancelin is an architect by profession, but an artist at heart. The reason why he made it a point to visit art exhibitions as part of his architectural studies. His inspiration is the impressive works of minimalist artists, such as Carl Andre, Donald Judd, and Sol Lewitt.
Lancelin’s works first came to notice, when he posted some images of his work, such as the ‘Pink Pyramid’ and ‘Chain’, on social media. The viewers simply loved his work and encouraged him to continue. The impressive amalgamation of architecture and art by this French artist is for all to see.
Lancelin, who was born in Lyon, France, developed his unique style during the 15 years he worked for some of the most renowned architects and artists in Paris, France, and Los Angles, USA. It was in 2016 that he decided to start his own studio in Lyon, where he currently lives. Naming his creative studio ‘Town & Concrete’, Lancelin began producing work on a gigantic scale. Today, his impressive installations are delighting viewers across the globe.
Lancelin’s installations, such as ‘Mix’ had melons and other fruit-shaped elements that were scaled up to create a surreal space. Similarly, the one titled ‘Pyramid Torus’ has Tori elements stacked up on top of each other. All his works are so impressive as to transcend the conventional norms of architecture and space. Not for nothing does he call himself ‘an artist working on the architectural scale’.
In an interview with mind-mag.com, Lancelin explains his style, thus, “I use primitive forms, such as spheres, cylinders, torus, etc. and I multiply them with parametric computer tools that allow me to test various solutions for assembling shapes while altering their scale. Multiplication makes it easier to reach the immersive.” His preferred material for inflatable large-scale installations is PVC fabric due to its translucence. He uses other materials too.
Lancelin is currently working on an exhibition, ‘Flutter’, in Los Angeles and on temporary installations in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. In addition, he’s also working on sculptures in Dubai, UAE, and Krakow, Poland. He enjoys a fan following of over 100,000 on Instagram alone.
