Imagine working for the Indian Railways as Chief Ticket Inspector and then leaving the job to pursue your passion. This is what Bijay Biswal exactly did, for he is no ordinary artist, but an internationally renowned one. And to top it all, he’s completely self-taught!
Born in Pallahara in the Angul district of the Indian state of Odisha, Bijay was ever observant of what he saw around him. And the Indian Railways gave him ample opportunity to do that. This is the reason why most of his work is based on India rural life themes.
Bijay’s brilliance burns bright in any medium, be it watercolours, acrylic or oil pastels. He is completely at home painting, drawing cartoons or sketching caricatures. The hallmark of his work is perfection and an acute sense of colour. This is what makes his works vibrant and leave art lovers, connoisseurs and art critics craving for more.
Bijay has had his share of laurels and accolades. He was not only felicitated by the Government of Odisha but also received a special mention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio program, ‘Mann Ki Baat’. His works have been acknowledged worldwide earning him many prestigious art awards.
