This Fashion Designer’s ‘Painting With Fabric’, Using Tulle, Captures Global Attention

The art world never fails to surprise. You only need to have a look at Benjamin Shine’s creations. He describes his art as ‘painting with fabric’, where he creates art from lengths of tulle! For this, he has gained global recognition in the fashion industry.

One of Shine’s notable works was showcased in Maison Margiela Artisanal Spring 2017 collection, where he depicted a woman’s face wrapped around a trench coat using his technique. The tulle flowing from the lining of the coat into the smoky, ethereal image immediately grabbed the attention of the fashion industry.

In 2012, Shine, in collaboration with Riccardo Tisci, created three pieces that featured his tulle work on sportswear. In 2017, Bergdorf Goodman commissioned him to create an exhibition of five faces for his store’s window, titled ‘Seeing Through the Material’. Shine did this commendably by constructing, layering and manipulating the fabric to form the image. For this, he used 15 meters of tulle and took over four days to complete.

Shine studied fashion designing at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design and Central St. Martins in London. After graduating, he set up his creative studio in 2003. Here his multidisciplinary approach continues to add to his diverse portfolio with materials, techniques and constructional ideas.

Shine’s work has attracted big fashion labels; product and interior manufacturers; and international Arts and Design institutions, such as The New York Museum of Arts and Design, The Crafts Council, and others. He has also been commissioned by global brands, like Barclays Wealth, Coca Cola, Deutsche Bank, Eurostar, Givenchy, Google and MTV for various projects. His installations and public artworks are displayed the world over, as also his clothes and furniture designing.

Shine has been honored with the Red Dot Design Award, The Enterprising Young Brit Award and The Courvoisier Future 500 Art & Design Award.
