Artist Makes Gigantic Gingerbread Sculptures Of Hollywood Movie Characters

Artists all over the world love to replicate characters from Hollywood movies in various media, such as on canvas or sculpted in wire, metal, paper, cardboard or whatever they can lay their hands on. Now, here’s a sculptor, Caroline Eriksson, who creates such characters in gingerbread! Yes, you heard it right…gingerbread. And you thought gingerbread was only for cookies.

However, this sculptor, who’s from Stockholm, but now based in Norway, doesn’t create anything the size of a cookie but bakes mammoth gingerbread sculptures. And she’d been doing this every year on Christmas for many years. This year she created gingerbread Groot from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and a year previous, she had created the Xenomorph from ‘Alien’.

A passionate baker, Eriksson was fed up creating gingerbread houses year after year and started experimenting with other objects, such as boats, towers, castles, etc. Being a Hollywood movie buff, she was so impressed by the movie ‘Transformers’ that she created a gingerbread Optimus Prime. It won the first prize in a Norwegian baking contest. This motivated her to create other Hollywood movie characters.

However, sculpting gingerbread characters on this scale is not easy. For Groot, Eriksson took five weeks to complete. The challenge here was to make the dough thick enough to support the sculpture. This she did by adding lots of syrup and flour and made it stick around a metal frame.

On average, her gigantic gingerbread sculptures use around seven kilograms of flour and 11 packets of sugar. She uses melted sugar as glue so as to make the sculpture edible.
