Oh, how we all dream of living in a log cabin deep in the woods or on top of a tree or edge of a cliff, away from the polluted and stressful urban environs of a city! This yearning for natural surroundings and simpler existence motivated Zach Klein, co-founder of Vimeo, to create Cabin Porn. Much that the name insinuates, it has nothing to do with porn.
Klein showcases handmade cabins in his new book ‘Cabin Porn: Inspiration for Your Quiet Place Somewhere’. The book features photos of over 200 handmade wooden cabins from the backcountry of America and from all over the globe. Through this book, he inspires people to retreat in the tranquility of the wilderness.
Klein’s featured homebuilt cabins are in a variety of settings, such as tucked deep into the woods, hidden on the mountain tops, placed 30 feet above the ground on treetops, and many more. These cool hideaways depict an idyllic outdoor lifestyle that everyone craves deep in their hearts.
It was a busy and stressful city life that motivated Klein to do something about it. Initially, he founded Beaver Brook, a community deep in the woods living without power or phones. He mentions it in his book’s introduction, thus, “I’d spend six years in the city building online communities and now I wanted to build one offline.”
It wasn’t long when the idea of Cabin Porn was born. Klein with his group of friends began putting together a scrapbook for collecting photos of buildings that inspired them of what kind of homes they could build. His website cabinporn.com features all these pics and in its six years of existence, it already enjoys a following of over 10 million viewers.
Klein came up with the idea of putting together the pictures in the form of a book. For this, almost 12,000 people contributed to the pics of their cabins. So popular did these cabins become that his viewership on Instagram has gone over 500,000, a testimony to the inner craving of people to relocate themselves into the serenity of nature.
